SWOT analysis is an easy,
straight-forward tool that
helps you obtain a better
understanding of your
competitors and their
product/service positioning.
o
Strengths -
What are the strengths of
your company or product?
These could be such things
as strong financials, brand
recognition, leading market
share, excellent customer
service, robust product
line, or large geographic
territory.
o
Weaknesses –
What are the weaknesses of
your company or product (or
competitor's product)?
Often these may be direct
opposites of some of the
statements in the Strength
category. They can also be
such things as poor
leadership, acquisition
integration problems,
employee layoffs that might
negatively affect prior
excellent customer service,
customer losses, staff,
budget or regulatory
constraints or small
geographic territory.
o
Opportunities
– What opportunities can
your company or product use
to your advantage? These
can be things like new
product introductions,
recent awards or
recognitions, taking
advantage of recent mergers
which can distract the
companies involved and
enable competitors to win
away customers, new pricing
models for key products,
geographic expansion, a more
complete set of product
offerings, and moving into
new markets.
o
Threats – What
threats does your
company/competitor or
competing product face?
These can include
significant contract losses,
price wars, new regulatory
constraints, new
technologies making current
products obsolete, shrinking
geographic reach, market
share losses, or loss of key
staff.
