The matrix facilitates the daily use of strategic thinking within all levels of the organisation (Nicholls 1995).
The MCC matrix can be used at any level within the organisation. It can be used as a decision tool for divisions, departments, or even smaller units. (I.e. any unit or sub-unit that can define its mission and core competencies.)
It looks at the fundamental health of the entire ‘organisational tree’ by linking the organisations mission and its core competencies when making strategic decisions.
It is useful in challenging and refining the assumptions behind the definition of mission and core competencies
The matrix could be used in conjunction with a selection of the other matrices for a comprehensive analysis of a project/product.
