Model weaknesses

This matrix is limited in its applications outside the product-market area. It cannot be used to analyse projects for example (compared to the MCC matrix)

This approach does not look at degrees of opportunity in core competencies or in product-markets. These two dimensions are either existing or new (not good/bad new or good/bad existing)

This analysis looks at a corporation and not at the units (product/services) making up the corporation. Many companies have not considered this core competence approach and prefer the traditional approach where the unit of analysis for competitive strategy is a particular SBU or product / service.
